High-Pressure Air for Laser Cutting: 30% Lower Electricity Use

Project Background

Laser-cutting workshops using ordinary air compressors typically run into three problems. First, pressure fluctuation weakens the assist-gas jet, so cut edges on stainless steel discolour through oxidation. Second, insufficient flow cannot support thick-plate cutting: on 10 mm carbon steel the jet loses the kinetic energy needed to clear the kerf. Third, an inadequate dryer dew point lets moisture condense on the focusing lens, which shortens lens life and raises consumable cost.

These are compressed-air problems rather than laser problems, and they are addressed by matching pressure, flow and air quality to the cutting process.

Solution

Equipment: SIND SE high-pressure laser-cutting screw air compressor (16–20 bar), with integrated air receiver, precision filter and refrigerated dryer.

The unit is an all-in-one high-pressure package built around a variable-speed screw compressor:

  • 16–20 bar output supports large-diameter nozzles, allowing thick carbon steel to be cut in a single pass.
  • Pressure stability of about ±0.5 bar keeps the jet steady, reducing dross and burrs.
  • Compressor, receiver, precision filter and refrigerated dryer are integrated, delivering clean, dry air to protect the focusing lens.
  • A variable-speed drive matches power to the cutting load instead of running at fixed speed.

Results

On a 24-hour duty cycle, the variable-speed machine consumes about 30% less electricity than a fixed-speed equivalent. The operator reports an electricity-cost saving of roughly US$54 per day (CN¥384) and a marked extension of lens service life, because dry, high-purity air keeps the optics clean.

As with any compressed-air upgrade, the actual saving depends on the cutting mix, duty cycle and local tariff.
