Argon Centrifugal Compressor Performance at a Silicon Plant
Introduction
A silicon materials manufacturer in North China runs argon centrifugal compressors as part of its production process, and station No. 1 is equipped with SIND units. Argon duty is demanding: the gas is supplied dry and sealed, the discharge pressure has to hold steady for the downstream separation train, and the machine runs continuously — so unit flow power and shaft vibration are the two figures that decide whether the station stays reliable.
Station Parameters
SIND Argon Compressor (Station No. 1)
| Flow Rate | 5,000 Nm³/hr |
| Motor Power | 570 kW |
| Rated Current | 38.7 A |
| Discharge Pressure | 0.56 MPaG |
| Operating Current | 39 A / 38.7 A |
Measured Performance
| Parameter | Measured | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Rated flow | 5,000 Nm³/hr | at 0.56 MPaG discharge |
| Unit flow power | 0.114 kWh/Nm³ | station measurement |
| Shaft vibration | 9.4 / 5.4 / 3.0 μm | all readings below 10 μm |
| Discharge pressure | 0.56 MPaG | held steady in service |
Why the Duty Is Demanding
Dry, sealed gas
Argon reaches the compressor dry and sealed, so the machine has to run without introducing contamination into the gas stream. Oil-free compression removes any risk of oil carry-over reaching the process.
Steady pressure for the separation train
Downstream separation depends on a constant discharge pressure rather than a wide control band. The unit held 0.56 MPaG in service, which keeps the separation train stable.
Continuous running
The station runs around the clock, so shaft stability is a reliability question rather than a comfort one. All measured vibration values stayed below 10 μm.
Conclusion
The SIND centrifugal unit at station No. 1 delivers 5,000 Nm³/hr of argon at 0.114 kWh/Nm³ unit flow power, with every measured vibration value below 10 μm. For continuous argon duty, that combination — unit flow power and shaft stability — is what keeps the station running and the separation train steady.
